About Hypnosis
Hypnosis is a natural state of awareness that we experience all the time. It’s nothing more than a controlled awareness like what we experience when we meditate, pray, or daydream. It’s the state we experience when we concentrate on something intently.
We all produce electrical signals in the brain as we go about our daily lives, and they are associated with different levels of awareness. Brainwaves are electrical activity in the brain that can be measured using an EEG machine. The higher the frequency the more conscious and alert we are. Lower frequencies like Delta are associated with sleep whereas the Beta wave is associated with the waking state. When we go into hypnosis, we enter the Theta wave, which is nothing more than a relaxed, calm state of highly focused awareness.
Hypnosis is a powerful tool for change and change is the only way we improve and get better. Changing our lives doesn’t happen by accident, we have to work at it, and hypnosis works by changing the most important component of wellbeing: our thoughts and beliefs. It helps us heal our past and move forward without the baggage that has held us back. This is accomplished by accessing the power of the subconscious mind. This is the part of the mind that stores all of our experiences, all of our memories, our habits, and it’s also where we store limiting beliefs like fear and doubt; the subconscious is the storehouse for everything we have ever learned and experienced.
Hypnotherapy is the process whereby we delete all the old programs and replace them with positive and affirming ones that mold and shape us so that we can become the healthy and happy person we have always wanted to be.
Hypnosis Myths
Many people believe that hypnosis is sleep but the truth is that we don’t lose consciousness during hypnosis. We are completely aware and in control, just like we are when meditating or praying.
Another common myth is that hypnosis is mind control but that is completely false. We are never out of control and are always aware of ourselves and our minds and at no point do we give control to anyone else.
Another myth is that we can be made to do something embarrassing like cluck like a chicken or bark like a dog, but these are also completely false. Because we are always in control, we can’t be made to do anything that we don’t want to do. That perception has been propagated through film and television but it’s just not true. If you don’t normally bark like a dog or cluck like a chicken, you won’t do it in hypnosis.
How Does Hypnosis Work
Hypnotherapy can reprogram our subconscious mind to help us become the person we’ve always wanted to be by simply changing what we believe about ourselves. The subconscious is like a computer’s hard drive that stores software and many of these programs are harmful just like a computer virus.
Many of us have subconscious programs running including negative conditioning that we’ve had since childhood, and they keep us stuck and limited. We have to delete them just like we delete old computer software and reinstall new and affirming programs that help us reach our full potential. Our beliefs, habits, experiences, behaviors, memories, and emotions are stored in the subconscious and in order to create change, we have to access and reprogram the subconscious and delete negative and self-limiting beliefs.
Hypnosis creates lasting change in our lives and is used to alleviate bad habits, reprogram negative patterns, help us achieve dreams and goals, and heal pain and trauma from our past.
